Goole 1st 3-5 Grimsby 1st
Grimsby hockey club ladies 1st team travelled to Goole expecting a tough game after their second string succumbed to a 6-0 defeat at the hands of Goole 1sts only the other weekend.
Looking rather shaky from the start, within the first 5 minutes Grimsby where 2-0 down after Goole broke though some poor marking from the Grimsby defence to put pressure on the away side.
From this moment on the match swung in and out of control for Grimsby, but during the moments of control the passing interplay was superb from Gaenor Thompson, Hannah Baker, Lisa Foster and Jo Turner feeding constant balls in for Anne Lambert, Teresa Oaten and Vicky Pannell to exploit.
The pressure from the Grimsby attack paid dividends when they were awarded a short corner which was struck fiercely by Lambert who was only denied by the post, but Pannell was on hand to get the rebound and score. Not long after the first Grimsby were awarded another short corner from some good build up play by Baker. This set piece again provided an opportunity for Pannell to score her second of the match from close range. With only 15 minutes of play being played the game was already 2-2 and was any ones for the taking.
The Goole attacking line continued throughout the first half to cause trouble for the Grimsby defence but was only denied by some fine saves from keeper Jude Livingston and resolute defending by Thompson who at every defending short corner was quick to intercept the strike making sure no shot was made.
After a well taken tackle by Helen Austin in the Grimsby defence she hit a long ball down the wing to Lambert who swung the ball to Oaten to change the direction of play where she passed to Thompson at the top of the D who struck first time and score putting the Grimsby side in the lead for the first time of the match.
With constant pressure from both teams and end to end hockey it was Lisa Foster who skilfully evading several players earned her side another short corner where Thompson scored her second of the match and ended the first half with a score line of 4-2.
From the start of the second half Goole came out with physical challenges on and off the ball more intent on getting another goal. Both sides continued to pressure rise each others defence through short corners and open play opportunities but neither able to convert these into goals.
It was through some individual skill from Katie Augusta that produced the goal of the match. Picking up the ball in defence, she went round several Goole players and came off the better as she expertly eased from one end of the pitch to the other to score a great solo effort.
The Grimsby defence stood firm and with some good tackles and fine saves kept the Goole attack frustrated. It was just for one lapse of concentration in the last 5 minutes of the match from the defence that let Goole score. The end result was a well earnt 5-3 win for the Grimsby side after a hard fought and physical game by two very evenly matched sides.
